I figured that I would get a race under the before I put any updates into the blog. Things have been going ok here. Oddly we had a little snow the other night up here on the hill. All the flakes were tiny and the ground wasn't cold enough for anything to stick. Still blew my mind, I didn't forget where I was by any means, just still not used to seeing snow, let alone in November.
This past week was a blur, nothing really exciting happened. Played with my position a bit more. Decided to go all the way and slide my cleats back and take the dremil to the rubber and make some more clearance. The position feels pretty good. I don't really feel like I've lost any snap, which you're supposed to lose when you put the cleat more towards the center of the foot. I also feel like I'm balanced better, but maybe that's all in my head.

Kept it local this weekend and went to the race in Putny, VT. on Sunday. I took Eli and Emerson with me. Eli is a young kid who rides DH and is into video production and editing. He came out to the NoHo races and I think he's hooked on cyclocross now. Can you really blame the kid? It's fun getting all the gravity kids into other parts of cycling culture, so watch out Sam Smith, this kid might have your number soon.

The drive to Putney was short, just about an hour north of us. I was thinking the drive would be pretty uneventful, what the hell can happen in an hour? Well a fair amount apparently. Emerson and I got onto the subject of how racing this cross season has gone so far. He was talking about the shit luck he's had with mechanicals when a really loud CRACK came from the top of the car, I looked back in my rear view mirror and saw Emerson's bike pressed against my rear window! I pulled over pretty quickly and got out, Emerson forgot to hook the wheel strap down. No biggie, it scared the crap out of me and thankfully didn't break my window, no harm done. We continued on to the race, which surprised me to see that it was directly off the highway. This would explain the lack of directions on the flyer.

When we got there the course was frozen over. Sadly, that didn't last long and made a lot of the corners a bit slick. The course was a ton of fun. A sweet downhill, some fun bmxish aspects, and a killer run up. What more could you want? How bout no corn fields for starts. They lined us up at the bottom of run up and off we went. Some man child hot tubes kid almost took a bunch of us out because he decided he was just going to ram someone. Luckily no one went down, I was grateful because I was right behind this action, which meant I got a bad start. A group formed at the bottom of the downhill going into the corn field and I was slightly off it. I jumped hard out of the corners on the cornfield to get over to the lead group. When I got over to the group on the road they were recovering to prep for the run up, while I was hurting a little bit. When we hit the run up it piled up a bit, I was the jerk slamming into the back of the group. At the top I got popped off the group and started to float around, not something I wanted. The rest of the race went down like this. I had a ton of fun on the bike, the position change is good, but I'm lacking tons of fitness. Pretty much I was on for 2 laps at a time, not good. I had fun ripping down the descent and getting the bike sideways in the mud slicks at the bottom transition. I ended up 14th and with a big craving for candy. Guess that's the only thing I can give to explain why I woke up at 5am searching for one of my stash bags of candy.......

I'm not exactly sure what I did to myself yesterday. One of two things happened : 1) I knocked myself stupid or 2) I finally knocked some sense into my head. Most of you would agree that I'm not very bright so how could I possibly get any dumber. And well there's probably not much hope for me gathering any sense, that type of blow would probably kill me before contributing to any greater good of my mental state.
This does involve a race report, I'll keep it short, because after all it's pretty easy to sum up.

Yesterdays race was the Cycle-Smart Classic here in the Pioneer Valley. This is a part of the New England State (had to do it mick) Verge Series, which means that it is a UCI ranked race. Some of the usual suspects were out in Colorado racing the Boulder Cup stuff, but trust me it was still very quick. We lined up some 60 deep, I am still pointless so to the back of the starting grid I went. They said go and off we went down the first oh shit corner. For those of us in the back this wasn't much fun, sprinting down a paved road into a 90* bend with 50something dudes in front of you will get the blood going. Picked my way through some people through the corners, tried not to punch it a lot figured I would weed my way through. We started to approach the steep run up, it didn't seem like it was going anywhere but everyone coming into it came in at full speed and crammed there way in, I was one of the latter. Somewhere in the madness of the run up, the ground came out from under me and I suddenly found myself in a bad spot. My head managed to hit my handlebar pretty hard then I managed to go further south finding my face in the ground with the rest of my body. Somehow I got up quickly and ran as hard as I could, but when I remounted my bike it wasn't difficult to tell that something wasn't right. In retrospect I probably should have pulled out at this point but I choose to keep trying. That was fairly pointless though because I had no more focus, no more "GRRRRR FACE" as MegaBilatoot would say. She has bad gas people, its true. Anyone watching could see that I looked lost out on the race course and well that was due to the fact that I was. The rest of the race was pretty lame I kept pedaling but no solid effort was coming from my legs making it fairly difficult to do anything. With 4 laps to go they pulled me and I was happy to get out of the way. To say the least I was pretty bummed, regardless. This was a close race and everyone wants to do well when they are on "home turf".
BIGBIGBIG props to the cycle-smart crew and everyone involved with the race! What a great venue and a great lay out. This was my first time attending the race and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Now back to the knocked stupid portion. Anyone who's bumped there head once or twice might be able to comment on this, but last night I had some weird dreams and some trouble sleeping between dreams. The first one was probably the worst, every dream was interrupted from me waking up somehow. It was like a bad interval session, eventually I would fall back asleep only to have the same crap happen. Anyone ever have this happen to them? Did something get triggered from this? I hope not because that honestly was not my idea of fun. Anyways I think I'll be alright, going to take it easy today which is a difficult thing for me to do.

I'm stealing this from the idiots at thebikegame.com and I don't think I should give them any credit b/c we all know they don't really deserve it. If you find yourself in Georgia (b/c i know there are tons of international readers of this blog) check this event out. Why? Well Ronnie Thomson is dude in charge at thomson bicycle products and who doesn't love their products?

I'll gladly admit that the second it was announced that Led Zeppelin would be doing a one time show, I was excited. Yeah ok, start up on the entire, OH they are so old and washed up. Thanks but ugh go do something else instead of reading this. Maybe they aren't as trendy as everything else you listen to, but what you're listening to wouldn't be what it is if these people weren't introduced to one another many years ago. Let us be realistic, they were good and you and i both, all of us for that matter still listen to their pieces some almost 40 years later.
Halloween wasn't much, hung out at the local pro house with some rad people in the valley after cross practice. I arrived a bit late, not something you want to do with a large group of cyclist, there wasn't much of anything left to eat, my fault. It was nice to hang out with good people instead of being confined to our shack. Highlight of the night had to be watching Jeremy Powers spin some tunes in Trebon's national champ kit.
Getting kinda late kiddos.
i'll leave you with this
